LB Fred Johnson (6-3 225) of Norfolk, VA announced Saturday a commitment to USC. Johnson made an official visit with the Gamecocks last weekend after attending the first Shane Beamer Camp session of the month. He scratched plans for an official visit to Virginia Tech next weekend after deciding to commit to Beamer’s program.
Johnson also had offers from Duke, Maryland, Temple, Rutgers, Liberty, Charlotte, Connecticut, Appalachian State and others.
Johnson has been a rising prospect in recruiting circles. He’s also a receiver at Maury High School but has put on some weight and grown into a linebacker prospect without losing any speed. He reportedly turned in a 4.54 time in a 40-yard dash clocking at the USC camp.
Johnson is the second linebacker commitment for the class joining William Gregory of Marietta, GA, and he’s the 11th commitment overall. His commitment also represents the second of the three commitment alerts Beamer tweeted during the week following the official visits.
