CB Chasen Johnson (6-1 180) of Sanford, FL was among the half-dozen official visitors to USC last weekend. Gamecock secondary coach Torrian Gray is recruiting Johnson because he likes his cover skills, and he brought Johnson in for an official visit so he could see for himself what the Gamecocks are building in Shane Beamer’s third year.
“The thing that stood out to me the most was the love the coaching staff has for the players,” Johnson said. “First of all, it’s on their wall. That’s the first word that they emphasized throughout the whole visit. They’ve got the head coach out there. He’s real hands on. They just really put their effort into making us educated that we know they love us.”
Johnson also was educated on the way of the Gamecocks on defense. He likes that Gray trusts his corners enough to play an extensive amount of man coverage.
“They like me with press man,” Johnson said. “They like how I press in high school, how I press on almost every play. Coach Gray said he would like to develop me because I’ve only played one year at DB. Coach Gray is real cool. I know that from his resume that he would develop me right.”
Johnson has more visits coming up, but for now, he’s got the Gamecocks strongly on his mind.
“They are definitely a top school, and I would love to go there,” Johnson said. “They are definitely one of the schools I’m thinking hard about. They are definitely up there, that’s for sure. I really want to get back over there. I’m just going to let the coach know and see what’s up.”
Johnson visited UCF on June 1st. He has an official visit scheduled for this weekend to Pitt, and he’s scheduled to visit West Virginia on June 16th. Johnson said he was going to attend a camp at Texas A&M this month but had to cancel those plans because of a conflict with a 7-on-7 event in Los Angeles.
He’s looking at late August to early September for a commitment announcement. Some of his other offers include Missouri, UCF, Cincinnati, Indiana, Florida State, West Virginia, Illinois, Iowa State and Oregon State.
