It was an anything but normal Wednesday for Coastal Carolina head football coach Jamey Chadwell. During his weekly press gathering, the veteran head coach dropped a bombshell to kick off his briefing.

“Grayson (McCall) will be out three to six weeks,” Chadwell said in relaying major injury news involving CCU’s starting quarterback. “We’ve spent the last five days rehabbing and meeting with our doctors and getting their expertise if he could play. He suffered a foot injury in the third quarter of the Appalachian State game. The risk for him to play is just too great right now.”

A preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, McCall has been dealing with foot injuries for much of this season, as he is an accomplished runner to go along with his 69% completion percentage and 21 passing touchdowns.

The redshirt junior will most likely be replaced in the starting lineup by super senior Bryce Carpenter. The Sarasota, Florida, native is no stranger to the role, as he made two starts last season and six during his sophomore campaign. For his career, Carpenter has thrown for 1905 yards with 18 touchdowns. And much like McCall, Carpenter is mobile, rushing for 892 yards with five more scores.

Coach Chadwell also spent some time previewing Saturday’s matchup against Southern Mississippi at Brooks Stadium. The “Senior Day” contest represents a chance for the Chanticleers to lock up the Sun Belt Conference East Division title with a victory. The game kicks off at 7:30pm on ESPNU.
