#Gamecocks women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley on Brittney Griner and her decision to cancel series with BYU (AUDIO)

Dawn Staley stands her ground when it comes to Brittany Griner and BYU (Ryan Bethea)

The defending national champion USC women’s basketball team officially opened pre-season practice Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the day it was learned East Tennessee State would be the season opening opponent on November 7th to replace the BYU game which was cancelled by coach Dawn Staley over claims by a Duke volleyball player that she was taunted with racial slurs during a game at BYU in August. BYU said it conducted a thorough investigation and found no collaborating evidence.

A Salt Lake City TV station reported Wednesday USC owes BYU 100-thousand dollars for cancelling the two-game series, but USC issued a statement to The State Wednesday afternoon denying that because the contract was never executed.

Staley met with the media after Wednesday’s practice and among questions about her team for this year, she was asked about her continuing support for basketball star Brittany Griner who remains in a Russian jail, and she was asked if she had shared her information on the Duke-BYU matter that led to her cancelling the basketball games with BYU officials.
