#STRecruiting Notebook 8-30

Oceanside Collegiate OT Monroe Freeling Monday night became the last of the major uncommitted in-state prospects to name his school when he announced for the Georgia Bulldogs. Freeling chose Georgia over Clemson, Alabama, Florida and Miami. “They really just checked all my boxes,” Freeling told the media after his announcement. “They have great competition. They had like seven first-round draft picks. Also, they recruited me really heavy, and having good academics. It really just came down to the vibe. I went up there for my last visit and the vibe just stayed constant.”

By our count, 25 prospects from the state have committed to FBS programs. Four are headed to USC, the other 21 are going out of state. The most well known in-state uncommitted prospect is Spartanburg QB Raheim Jeter, who once was committed to West Virginia.

  1. Speaking of in-state prospects…is DQ Smith on scholarship now? I read an article the other day (don’t remember which site), that made it sound that way. Although it was kind of ambiguous. It mentioned how the NCAA got rid of the per year limits, so he was able to be a part of this class instead of greyshirting. But by my count, that would put us at 86?

Here is my count before DQ Smith:
    DL: 17
    LB: 8
    DB: 16
    QB: 5
    RB: 5
    WR: 11
    TE: 6
    OL: 15
    ST: 2

      1. This adds up to 85, and there’s no DQ Smith on that list. All of these players are still listed on the official roster, so who is no longer on scholarship? Or was one of those specialist never put on scholly? Or is Terrell off now that he’s injured? This is really bothering my numbers OCD.

DE: Strachan, Burch, Fitten, Johnson, Dawkins, Edmonds, Thomas Jr (7)
DT: Webb, Pickens, Hemingway, Huntley, Barrett, Sanders, Hixon, Whyce, Watson, Martin (10)
LB: Johnson, Greene, Kaba, Scott, Williams, Ware, Westmoreland, Blanton (8)
DB: Roderick, Reed, Rush, Ross, C. Smith, Dial, Spaulding, Norris, Fortune, Hunter, Nelson, Floyd, Banks, Rose, Williams, Emmawori (16)
QB: Rattler, Doty, Bailey, Davis, Gauthier (5)
RB: Beal-Smith, Lloyd, McDowell, Carroll, Amos (5)
WR: Vann, Brooks, Joyner, Brown, Legette, Wells, Rucker, Mangrum, Samson, Horton, Blake (11)
TE: Terrell, Stogner, Adkins, Bell, Kenion, Short (6)
OL: Wonnum, Douglas, Gwyn, Nichols, Manos, Campbell, Moore, Lee, Wannamaker, Jones, Henry, Brubaker, Mains, Morgan, Davis (15)
        ST: Jeter, Kroeger (2)

    1. Got it. Do you know if that ends his career, or would he be eligible to return on scholarship next season? I’m sure he’s a likely transfer candidate either way, given his injury history, age, and our numbers next year. He’s stuck it out so far though, I wouldn’t put it past him to return if he’s able.
