Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed’s affection for Georgia prospects is well documented. He keeps going back to the Peach State for more. His newest catch is Shelton Lewis (5-11 180) of Stockbridge who announced a commitment to the Tigers Monday morning at his school. He’s the third cornerback commitment in the class, all from Georgia.
Also working in Clemson’s favor with Lewis was his connection to three other Tigers commitments from his seven-on-seven team…LBs Dee Crayton and Jamal Anderson and CB Avieon Terrell.
As of May 1st, Lewis had a top five of Arkansas, Boston College, Pitt, North Carolina and Vanderbilt. Lewis at one time was headed to Pitt, but he decommitted from the Panthers in late June. He also looked hard at North Carolina, where he took an official visit in June.
He didn’t get to Clemson until the cookout on July 25th. That’s when Reed and head coach Dabo Swinney made their offer with his dad and other family members present. From that point, Clemson move to the top of his list. Some of his other offers were Maryland, NC State, Duke and Mississippi State.
Last season Lewis had 31 tackles and broke up 8 passes. He’s also a state champion in the 400 meters winning the event last May with a time of 48:04.
Lewis gives Clemson 19 commitments for their 2023 class, 10 of them coming from Georgia. He also gives the Tigers 5 commitments for their secondary.
