USC was a little late to the recruiting party with LB Jalen Smith (6-2 170) of Loganville, GA, but the party is not over. Smith has set three official visits for June and is considering USC for one of his final two. He has set visits with Virginia June 3rd and Tennessee June 10th and Pitt June 24th.
Gamecock recruiters Jody Wright and Clayton White were by his school this spring and he was offered by USC on May 20th.
“They came on a little late, but that’s fine,” Smith said. “I’m still open to any opportunities and I’m going to give them a chance, of course. I feel like they will be serious about me coming there, so I’ll definitely look into it.”
Last season Smith set a school record with 173 tackles with 14.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. White is the Gamecocks’ defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, and no doubt envisions Smith making a lot of plays for him should he come to Columbia.
“They see me as a middle linebacker, someone that can play outside the box or inside,” Smith said. “My skillset, they like what they see, me being able to run sideline to sideline as well as being able to cover, being able to play in the box and being able to stick my nose into the gap and make a hit.”
Along with USC, Smith said he’s also considering Texas, LSU and Mississippi State for the other official visits. He also has offers from USF, Western Kentucky, Vanderbilt, UAB, Houston, Utah, Maryland and Georgia Tech.
Smith visited Texas for the spring game, and he also made spring stops at Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and Miami. He’d like to make his decision this summer, possibly in late June or early July after those official visits.
