The Charleston Southern Buccaneers may be the surprise of the postseason thus far. On Thursday, CSU upset #1-seed Campbell 7-6 at the Big South tournament in High Point, North Carolina. It’s the first time since 2006 that the #1-seed has lost its opening game at the Big South tourney. The fifth-seeded Bucs got three RBIs from infielder Nick Rodriguez to remain in the winner’s bracket where they will face USC-Upstate on Friday at 3pm. The Spartans were a 4-2 winner over Gardner-Webb on Thursday.
The Southern Conference tournament took the day off on Thursday. Anticipating that the weather wouldn’t be ideal in Greenville, the league decided earlier this week to begin with four games on Wednesday instead of two each Wednesday and Thursday. Friday, Wofford will square off with UNCG at 9am with The Citadel scheduled for the nightcap of the quadrupleheader. The Bulldogs will face either Mercer or Sanford at 7:30pm.
There was a big upset today at the Colonial tournament in Elon, NC where the top-seed Charleston Cougars fell to Northeastern 6-5. The College trailed 6-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, where they plated two runs to cut the deficit in half. In the 9th, CofC scored once but could not push across the tying run. The Cougars will face either UNCW or Elon at 3pm on Friday in a loser’s bracket matchup.
The Sun Belt tournament will resume in Montgomery, Alabama on Friday. After days of rain, the league has changed the format to a single-elimination tournament. Coastal Carolina will tee it up first at 10am ET against Troy.
