A deluge of rain and runs were enough for Virginia to score an 11-6 win over Clemson in game one of their ACC series. The contest was halted in the fourth inning on Friday night with the game tied at four, due to the heavy rains in Charlottesville. When play resumed on Saturday afternoon, the Cavaliers outscored the Tigers 7-2 to pick up their 36th win of the season. Clemson fell to 31-19 overall and 9-15 in ACC play. Game two of the series was supposed to be played following the resumption of the series opener. However, more rain in Virginia has postponed that contest until Sunday morning at 10am. According to both schools, a decision on the date/time of game three will be made on Sunday morning.
GM #1 Recap: For three and a half innings things were going well for Clemson as the Tigers quickly jumped on UVA starter Brian Gursky. Home runs by Tyler Corbitt in the first and Jonathan French in the second, sparked the Tigers to a 4-0 lead. However, as Mack Anglin was settling in for the bottom of the fourth inning, the skies opened up. But not before the Cavaliers plated four runs on a two-run triple, bases loaded walk, and wild pitch from Anglin. The latter, along with another walk, prompted the umpires to suspend the game.
When play resumed on Saturday afternoon, both teams turned to their bullpens. Virginia took advantage of Tigers’ reliever Jackson Lindley, scoring three more runs to grab a 7-4 advantage after four innings of play. UVA scored five times with two outs, taking advantage of a total of six walks in the extended fourth inning.
Clemson pulled to within one in the fifth as Max Wagner crushed a two-run homer, his 24th of the season, to narrow Virginia’s lead to 7-6. However, the Cavaliers added four insurance runs in the eighth inning to put the game away.
Matthew Buchanan (3-1) retired all three batters he faced in relief to earn the win, while Brandon Neeck pitched 1.2 innings to record his third save of the year for UVA. Clemson starter Mack Anglin (5-5) suffered the loss, after being charged with all seven runs in that decisive (and long) fourth inning.
