#SportsTalk Spring FB Practice Rewind: SC State (AUDIO)

The offense beat the defense 21-13 during SC State’s spring game in April (SC State Athletics)

National champions! That’s how SC State will be remembered coming off its 31-10 win over Jackson State in the Celebration Bowl last December. So with that as a backdrop, the HBCU national champs wrapped up spring preparation for the 2022 season in late April.

The Bulldogs were 7-5 last season, winning the MEAC with a 5-0 conference mark. Quarterback Corey Fields (Hollywood, SC) threw for over 2,300 yards with 18 touchdowns. He also scored two rushing TDs and was second on the team with 346 yards on the ground. Unfortunately, Fields wasn’t able to participate in the spring game with a sprained ankle. Head coach Buddy Pough didn’t beleive it was serious and noted that Fields would have played had it been a regular season game.

SC State also continued its run of putting players into the NFL. Defensive back Dacobie Durant was selected in the fourth round by the LA Rams with the 142nd overall pick. The MEAC “Defensive Player of the Year” and a first team FCS All-American, Durant led the Bulldogs with three interceptions and 12 pass breakups while making twelve starts last season. He also collected 38 total tackles.

Pough dropped by #SportsTalk in late April to recap his team’s 2021 campaign and to look forward to the upcoming season.
