BJ McKie is South Carolina’s all-time leading scorer in basketball. His jersey hangs from the rafters at the Colonial Life Arena, one of just five retired in the history of the program. He wanted to be the new head coach of the Gamecocks after Frank Martin was fired. He worked his way into the final two but ultimately was passed over for Lamont Paris.
McKie currently is an assistant coach at Wake Forest. He also was a strong candidate for the Georgia State job but lost out to Jonas Hayes. McKie, who turned 45 on Thursday, knows he’ll reach the right point and right time in his career to become a head coach. That time just wasn’t now, and he’s satisfied to serve at the right arm of Steve Forbes for another season.
Thursday night McKie joined us on SportsTalk to talk publicly for the first time about his involvement in the search for the new head coach at his alma mater.
