Trouble in Tiger town as No. 15 Clemson fell to No. 23 Miami 11-4 on Friday night, marking three consecutive losses for the Tigers after starting the season a program best 14-0. Miami built an eight-run cushion over the first four innings, chasing Clemson ace Mack Anglin off the mound after just 3.0 innings, his shortest outing of the young season. With the win, Miami improves to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, while Clemson drops to 14-3 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.
Anglin (3-1) struggled with control from the opening pitch, allowing six earned runs, while tossing five walks to go along with 3 strikeouts, and a costly run scoring wild pitch. Hurricanes starter Carson Palmquist (4-1) got the win for Miami, working 6.1 scoreless innings, to go along with 11 strikeouts to only two walks.
Miami took advantage of two first inning, one out walks, before Maxwell Romero singled through the right side to drive in the first run of the ballgame. Jacob Burke then hit a sac-fly to right, scoring the second run for the Hurricanes in the opening frame. The visitors added to their lead with back-to-back singles in the second inning, a stolen base, and then an Anglin wild pitch, making it 4-0.
Miami doubled the score with four runs in the 4th inning, and from there, the rout was on. The Canes added 2 unearned runs in the 6th, along with 1 more unearned run in the 8th. Clemson scored 3 in the 8th, highlighted by Blake Wright’s 1st HR of the season. Wright tacked on a solo shot in the 9th, to provide the final margin.
The Tigers look to even the series Saturday at 3 pm, from Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson. The game can be viewed on ACC Network Extra.
