Clemson’s bats fell silent and Tigers pitchers gave up three homers to Georgia State cleanup hitter Griffin Cheney in a 6-1 loss at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Tuesday. All three of Cheney’s homers came with two strikes.
Clemson (14-2) reached base 11 times in the first five innings but managed just one run against Panthers starter Camren Landry. Landry kept the Tigers off balance with an array of breaking balls before giving way to hard-throwing Chad Treadway. Treadway allowed just one Tiger to reach base as he picked up the win in relief. Bryar Hawkins drove in Clemson’s only run by way of an RBI single in the third inning.
The 15th-ranked Tigers had won 14 straight to open the season before dropping their last two. Clemson will open ACC play and look to regain its momentum at 6 p.m. Friday, against No. 23 Miami.
