The University of South Carolina announced on Monday that it has parted ways with head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin. The Miami, Florida native just finished his 10th year at USC, which made him the third-longest tenured head coach in Gamecock men’s basketball history. Martin compiled a 171-147 record at Carolina, including a 79-99 mark in SEC regular-season games. The Gamecocks won 20-plus games twice during his tenure, reaching one NCAA Tournament and the NIT once.

“After a thorough evaluation of our men’s basketball program, we have decided to make a change,” USC Director of Athletics Ray Tanner stated in a media release. “We are grateful for the dedication that Coach Martin has made to Gamecock Basketball. We wish him and his family nothing but the best in the future.”

A national search for a new men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.

“Our expectation is to compete for Southeastern Conference and national championships,” said Tanner.  “We have great facilities; a passionate fan base and we provide our student-athletes an outstanding experience at the University of South Carolina. We will hire someone with a winning coaching history, who has the energy, passion, and commitment to excellence in all areas of the student-athlete experience.”

Only Frank McGuire (16 seasons, 1964-80) and Frank Johnson (14.5 seasons, 1940-43; 1946-58) have served as the head Gamecock men’s basketball coach longer than Martin.

The Gamecocks finished this season with an 18-13 record, 9-9 during SEC regular season play. Carolina tied for fifth in the SEC standings and was the 7th seed in the recently concluded SEC Tournament in Tampa, Fla.

He coached Carolina to its first-ever NCAA Final Four in 2017, being named the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com. In the previous season, 2015-16, the Gamecocks went to the NIT, earning its first postseason bid since the 2008-09 season.

During Martin’s tenure, he coached four first-team All-SEC selections, including Sindarius Thornwell, who earned SEC Player of the Year and first-team All-America honors in 2017. Chris Silva was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and Duane Notice (2016) and Hassani Gravett (2019) were recognized as the SEC Sixth Man of the Year.

Martin was named the 32nd head coach in Carolina history on March 27, 2012, after serving as head coach at Kansas State for five seasons.

  1. Martin hated Castro ….he was very public with his criticisms (rightly so) of dumb ass SEC vax policies in ‘21/‘22….so Woke USC had to fire him !! Covid was BS…70 % Covid deaths were accompanied by 4 or more co morbidities ..,Vax have demonstrated to be more harmful to the younger vaxed than Covid virus…a fact per recent released CDC stats
Martin won more NCAA games than all the rest of coaches combined in school history …We only been to NCAA 9 times since 1932 intro of NCAA playoffs … Martin best basketball coach this school ever had …period.
SC MBB has many more issues than Coach Martin….our practice facilities are great for a WBB program but not on par with Ole Miss, Tenn, Fla etc …You know why Dawn complained of weight room for ladies last year during WBB Big Dane ? She accustomed to equal facilities with men.,
Fans suck .,,in the winningest 2 seasons (51 wins) in school history during !Martin years…..the CLA was a morgue , more times than not.
Scar has zero home court ..worst in SEC. I hope Martin get a job with school plays us …I pull for him ! He will be hired before we get a coach (if he still wants to coach).
Can’t wait to hear his side of story on today events …Ray went from blue collar to woke ivory tower..he not worth a damn… if I get a chance …I tell it to his face

  2. Thanks for the mindless dribble Troll(Anonymous). Coach Martin was as Woke as any coach in college basketball so that angle makes as much sense as your entire childish post.

Crawl back into your momma’s basement where you belong.
