USC head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin said he wasn’t concerned about his team’s shooting after the Gamecocks connected on 40% of their shots in Tuesday’s win over USC-Upstate. Following Friday’s loss to Princeton, the veteran head coach may need to rethink his position.
Carolina made only 36% from the field (4-of-26 from three point range) in a 66-62 loss to Princeton at the Asheville Championship in North Carolina. The Gamecocks will play Western Kentucky at 5pm on Sunday in the consolation game of the four team tournament. The Hilltoppers fell to Minnesota 73-69 in the opening game of the tourney on Friday.
USC never got on track offensively as Erik Stevenson missed all ten of his three point attempts, while James Reese knocked down just one of five from beyond the arc. Jermaine Couisnard led USC with seventeen points.
Meantime, the Tigers scorched the nets with eleven three-pointers, fueled by Jaelin Llewellyn’s four from long range. Llewellyn’s 16 points and 9 rebounds led Princeton to its second win of the season. This is also just the second game the Tigers have played since 2019, as last year’s campaign was shutdown by the Ivy League due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
