The USC basketball team will open the season at home tomorrow night against USC-Upstate, and the Gamecocks will be without leading returning scorer and rebounder forward Keyshawn Bryant. Gamecock head coach Frank Martin, at his first weekly press conference of the season, announced Bryant has been suspended for the first five games for violating athletic department policy. He did not elaborate.

Outside of missing Bryant, Martin said all other players will be ready to go as he begins his 10th season with the Gamecocks. Coming off a Covid-ravaged six-win campaign, Martin said he’s back to being his old self, and he has a lot of excitement about this season.

The Gamecocks have practically rebuilt their roster with veteran transfers and freshmen. Martin said he has a deep squad and could play as many as ten regularly.

The Gamecocks open the season in a rush with three games during the week. After Tuesday’s game at home, the Gamecocks will travel to Asheville to play Princeton Friday night and either Minnesota or Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon.
