The 16th ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers hit the road for the first time as they travel to Buffalo for a 12 noon kickoff on ESPN2. After playing on Thursday and Friday to open the 2021 campaign, the contest will also be CCU’s first Saturday outing of the football season.
The two teams have never met, though the Chanticleers have played three other teams from the Mid-American Conference over the years. Coastal dropped games at Kent State (2009) and Toledo (2012), before losing a matchup with Eastern Michigan in Conway on August 31st of 2019. CCU has also struggled against schools from the state of New York, posting an 0-6 mark over the last thirteen years. Stony Brook was the most played opponent from the “Empire State” during that span with the Chanticleers dropping all five matchups against the Seawolves as fellow conference opponents in the Big South.
On Wednesday, Coastal head football coach Jamey Chadwell met with the media to preview the Chanticleers matchup at Buffalo.
Key notes from Chadwell’s presser …
- When asked about 3rd down conversions where the Chanticleers are an amazing 73% thus far (11 of 15), Chadwell smartly answers, “the best way to be good on 3rd down, is not to be in any. You try to be good on first & second down calls. That’s going to be key in this game.”
- On Grayson McCall, who has the highest QB rating in the nation, Chadwell says that’s he’s a little unclear on how that stat is compiled. Adding, “he’s making smart decisions with the ball. I feel like he’s taking what the teams are giving him & he’s helping us be efficient.”
- Referencing the big number that last Friday’s game with Kanas drew on ESPN2, Chadwell illustrates that’s proof of interest in his program, “America loves the ‘Chants.”
