The college football season in South Carolina kicks off this week and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will get a jump start on the rest of the field with a Thursday night contest against The Citadel.
Coastal is coming off a historic 2020 campaign in which the Chanticleers claimed the Sun Belt Conference regular season crown and earned a berth in the Cure Bowl, finishing the year at 11-1 and ranked 14th in the final AP poll. Meantime, The Citadel was one of the busiest teams in the country the past twelve months; playing four four games in the fall, before taking on an eight-game spring schedule. The challenging slate included matchups with Clemson, South Florida, and Army, coupled with a full Southern Conference schedule between February and April
Thursday’s game will be just the third meeting between CCU and The Citadel with the most recent encounter occurring during the 2015 FCS playoffs. The Citadel scored a 41-38 victory in Conway, churning out 524 yards rushing to advance into the second round of the postseason before losing 14-6 to Chadwell’s former school, Charleston Southern, the following weekend. Kickoff Thursday is set for 7pm on ESPN+ at Brooks Stadium in Conway.
Coastal head coach Jamey Chadwell, entering his third full season with CCU, met with the media via Zoom on Monday to preview the matchup with the Bulldogs.
