#STRecruiting Notebook 8-1 (UPDATED Sunday afternoon)

USC missed on a top target Sunday when DT D’Andre Martin of Durham, NC committed to Virginia Tech.  Martin visited both schools last week, including a Thursday-Saturday stay at USC that concluded with Saturday’s cookout. 

Sumter DT Davin Jackson announced a commitment to NC State Sunday night. He also had USC, Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State on his short list. Jackson will miss his senior season while recovering from ACL surgery.

6-6 Julian Phillips of Blythewood plans to drop his top 10 schools Monday afternoon. His offers include Clemson, USC, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, Florida, Texas Tech, Alabama, Florida State, Indiana, LSU and Ohio State.  He took an official visit to Clemson in June. 

USC is in the top four with 2023 TE Ty Lockwood (6-5 220) of Nashville. The others are Florida State, Ohio State and Penn State. He visited Florida State earlier this week. Lockwood visited USC June 4th and was at Clemson the next day. He also visited Michigan and Ohio State. Lockwood is rated a four-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite and is ranked the #5 tight end nationally in his class.

Among the prospects who confirmed with social media posts attending the USC cookout Saturday were 2023 LB Troy Ford Jr. of Savannah, 2023 LB Grayson Howard of Jacksonville, 2023 DE Xzavier McLeod of Camden, 2023 RB Ike Daniels of Stafford, VA, 2024 OT Kam Pringle of Woodland, 2024 DL Hevin Brown-Shuler,

USC target LB Abdul Carter committed to Penn State.

2023 WR Braylon James (6-2 175) of Del Valle, TX visited Clemson Friday. He was at Georgia Saturday. He’s rated a four-star and is ranked the #23 receiver nationally in his class in the 247Sports Composite. USC has offered along with Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M, Penn State and others. In June, James visited Cal, Stanford and Ohio State.

2023 CB AJ Harris of Phenix City, AL visited Clemson this weekend.

2023 OT Monroe Freeling of Oceanside Collegiate visited Georgia earlier in the week.

Two of Clemson’s top remaining targets were at North Carolina Saturday in DT Travis Shaw and WR Andre Greene Jr. Also, TE/DE Benji Gosnell, a former Ohio State commitment who visited Clemson this week, visited the Tar Heels.

Clemson target 2023 RB Richard Young was at Florida Friday.

Laurens WR Jayden McGowan was offered by Vanderbilt.
