Five-star CB Jeadyn Lukas (6-2 175) of Mauldin, who is ranked the #1 prospect in South Carolina, the #6 corner nationally and the #32 prospect in the 2022 class in the 247Sports Composite, announced a commitment to Clemson Wednesday. Lukas deliberated much of the summer between the Tigers and North Carolina, with some strong consideration for Ohio State as well.
Lukas was at the Clemson cookout Sunday. He also visited the Tigers for their Elite Retreat in June and for their spring game in early April. He also took an official visit to North Carolina in early June.
Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed identified Lukas early on as a top candidate for him in the ’22 class. He offered Lukas on June 1st of 2020 and the Tigers immediately became the team to beat.
North Carolina did make a strong run for Lukas with Dre Bly heading up the Tar Heels’ efforts. After his official visit there, he spoke highly of the Tar Heels and had them right at the top with Clemson and Ohio State. But Reed, Brent Venables and Dabo Swinney were able to counter whatever gains the Tar Heels made when Lucas visited for the Retreat. And a planned official visit to Ohio State in late June didn’t come off.
It’s the second time in the last 11 days Clemson has beaten North Carolina for a prime-time corner. Earlier this month Daylen Everette committed to the Tigers after giving the Tar Heels a strong look.
Lukas is the first five-star recruit for the Tigers’ 2022 class according to ratings in the 247Sports Composite. Every other commitment, except for placekicker Robert Gunn, is a four-star. The Tigers now have 11 commitments for the class including three corners and two safeties. And he’s Clemson’s third commitment from the state joining OT Collin Sadler and WR Adam Randall.
On Tuesday night, Clemson gained a PWO commitment from punter Jackson Smith (6-5 230) of Saraland, AL. He’s ranked the #5 punter nationally in his class by Kohl’s Kicking Camps.
