Timing is everything in recruiting and right now, the timing isn’t quite right for USC and potential target LB Carter Wyatt (6-2 215) of Shallotte, NC. Wyatt took an unofficial visit to USC earlier this month, but a hand injury hampered his chances to impress the Gamecock coaching staff.
“They wanted to see me in person,” Wyatt said. “I guess they could call and still offer. I sent them a little workout video, but I didn’t workout in front of them or anything. They wanted me to come to camp all along. But I had surgery on my hand, so I couldn’t work out. It was good to meet the coaches and see the facilities and stuff. Got a chance to do a campus tour, looking at the school. We got to see the indoor, got to see the players lifting a little bit, see the coaches’ office, do a photo shoot, stuff like that.”
Defensive coordinator Clayton White is his primary recruiter at this point and while he’s impressed with Wyatt on film, White hasn’t quite tipped his hand on a possible role with the Gamecock defense.
“He kinda wants to see me in person, so we really didn’t talk about like fits and all of that,” Wyatt comments. “He said I’m a really good player. He likes the things that I do on the field. He’s thinks I’m a hard hitter and fly around to the ball.”
Wyatt has already taken official visits to Duke and Georgia Tech, and he is taking one to Syracuse this weekend. He has also taken unofficial trips to NC State, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, Charlotte, Liberty, East Carolina and Virginia Tech.
With regards to a potential offer from USC, Wyatt says the Gamecocks are in a holding pattern right now.
“They told me they want to keep building a relationship, too. Like, don’t just have it go on hold,” he says. “It’s just like a numbers thing really just trying to figure everything out. They really wish I could work out for them but it’s just bad timing.”
