The first week of the USC football camp saw several quarterbacks of different ages and reputations perform in front of quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield. Some already had offers from Satterfield. Others were hoping to grab his attention. One in the latter category was 2023 prospect Joshua Jones (6-1 190) of Fayetteville, NC.
Jones is a dual-threat quarterback who has started at Westover High the last two seasons. In the shortened spring season earlier this year, he passed for 570 yards and 6 touchdowns with one interception. Saturday, he worked out in front of Satterfield and feels he scored some points with the Gamecocks.
“The day was phenomenal and amazing,” Jones said. “I really enjoyed the campus, the atmosphere the coaches created, as well as the opportunity that was given to me to showcase my talents and ability as a quarterback. I feel I put my best effort forward and performed to the best of my ability. I feel I ran well but feel I can run faster posting a 40 time of 4.6. When it came to the quarterback field drills, I feel I was able to really display my talent as a quarterback. I feel I was able to place myself in a position to be seen by the USC coaching staff. I felt like I threw the ball very well to some very talented wide receivers, tight ends and backs.”
Jones was all ears when taking instruction from Satterfield, and he got a glimpse at his offensive mind and coaching style when it comes to quarterbacks.
“Coach Satterfield is an amazing coach,” Jones said. “He gave me a lot of positive feedback on my footwork, throwing ability, and accuracy. He even provided me with things to help me improve on to make me a better quarterback. I was very grateful to be able to receive the knowledge he was providing back to me. I look forward to working with him again.”
Jones also had the chance to check out the facilities for the football program. He liked what he saw.
“I am a big weight room guy, so when I saw that I enjoyed it” Jones said. “The practice facility and the football players area also were very nice.”
Among 2023 quarterbacks Satterfield has offered are Tad Hudson of Cornelius, NC, Carson Black of Nation Ford, Dylan Lonergan of Snellville, GA and Eli Holstein of Zachary, LA. Jones feels his performance Saturday at least got him on the board for considering by Satterfield for an offer.
“I feel I am factoring into their thinking,” he said. “Based upon my effort and how Coach Satterfield worked with me, I feel I may be given the opportunity to be recruited by USC.”
Jones camped at Duke Sunday and will be going to camps at Clemson, NC State, Wake Forest, East Carolina, North Carolina A&T, James Madison and Brown. And he plans another camp outing with the Gamecocks.
