USC’s hitters tuned up for the big weekend series with Clemson by crushing 7 home runs Tuesday afternoon in a 12-4 win over Winthrop at Founders Park. Three of the round trippers came off the bat of Wes Clarke. In the first four games of the season, Clarke has produced 6 home runs, 12 RBIs and a .769 batting average.
Braylen Wimmer, Clarke and David Mendham went back-to-back-to-back with homers in the 8th, and after an out, Josiah Sightler hit one out of the park as well. The Gamecocks racked up 15 hits and are hitting .348 as a team with 13 home runs thru four games.
Eight Gamecock pitchers struck out 17 Eagles. John Gilreath was the fifth of those pitchers and he didn’t allow a hit or a run over 1.1 innings to pick up his first win of the season.
The Gamecocks are 4-0 and will face Clemson Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, weather permitting, Saturday at Fluor Field in Greenville and Sunday at Founders Park.
