Martin, #Gamecocks ready for new hoops season (AUDIO)

Frank Martin has high hopes for his 9th USC team (Travis Bell/SIDELINE CAROLINA)

Frank Martin opens his 9th season as head basketball coach at USC this week. The Gamecocks play an exhibition game with Coker Wednesday night then open their season in a four-team event this weekend in Kansas City against Liberty. Martin has put together one of the most successful runs of any Gamecock basketball coach with six straight non-losing seasons, though he’s only taken the Gamecocks to one NCAA Tournament and one NIT in his eight seasons. But his hopes are high for this year’s team which is made up of a group of veterans, and a group of guards that can rival any in the SEC. Martin said Monday small forward Nathan Nelson suffered a broken hand last week and will be out a few weeks. Monday morning Martin spoke with the media via Zoom about the upcoming campaign.
