The USC campus is abuzz this week with the start of football season Saturday night in Columbia. Men’s soccer season also is underway. And now baseball is back, at least in practice form. The Gamecocks will begin their fall drills Thursday and coach Mark Kingston will have a team built around excellent pitching. The Gamecocks also will have a number of veterans in the field returning and will welcome one of the nation’s most acclaimed recruiting classes.

Right now, Kingston said he has 56 games scheduled for 2021, but that is not a definite. Covid conditions could dictate a conference only slate, and he could see seven-inning doubleheaders being plays ala Major League Baseball.

Kingston met with the media for a Zoom session Wednesday afternoon.
