#STRecruiting: #Gamecocks hoops target set to announce this week

Carlous Williams

USC basketball coach Frank Martin and assistant coach Bruce Shingler could be on the verge of landing a third commitment for the 2021 class. The Gamecocks already have a pair for the backcourt in Jacobi Wright and Devin Carter. Now they are going after a talented wing in 6-6 Carlous Williams of Gulfport, MS. Williams will celebrate his birthday Wednesday, but he’ll be the one presenting a gift to one coaching staff with his commitment announcement that morning at 11:00 AM.

USC, Houston, Baylor, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are the ones that have been on him the hardest. He also has offers from LSU, Oklahoma State, UAB, Southern Miss and Southern Miss. The Gamecocks, however, have emerged as very strong contenders.

“They (Gamecocks) first found out about me in my tenth grade summer,” Williams said.  “My coach had talked to one of their assistant coaches about me.  This year, in July, they probably started watching.  Some more coaches started telling them about me and they started catching on, watching the games, and ended up offering me.”

Williams averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds per game last season. He sad his basketball IQ and his physicality are two of his strengths. And he said Martin has laid out plans for how he would be used in his system.

“He basically likes that I play hard,” Williams said.  “I’m physical and I don’t give up.  They just like the way that I play.  He really hasn’t given me a specific position yet.  Depending on the matchup, if it’s a small guard, they’ll let me post up.  If it’s a person bigger than me, they are going to let me bring my quickness and let me play my game.”

Williams said USC will definitely get one of his official visits once they are allowed to be taken. And even though he’s announcing a commitment Wednesday, he said he won’t sign until the spring.
