#Gamecocks learn their two new SEC opponents

Alshon Jeffery makes catch against Auburn in 2010 SEC Championship Game

Friday night the SEC announced the two additional cross-over opponents for each of its teams to fill out the 10 game conference only schedule to be played in 2020. For USC, the Gamecocks picked up a home game with 11th ranked Auburn and a road game with Ole Miss. With the Auburn addition, the Gamecocks are now scheduled to play five of the top 13 teams in the Coaches Pre-Season Top 25.

“I’m excited about adding two teams that are very familiar to me personally,” said South Carolina head football coach Will Muschamp in a statement. “We will travel to Oxford and have Auburn come to Columbia. I have great respect for both programs. They both have great coaching staffs.”

The Gamecocks are 2-10 all-time against Auburn, including a 2010 loss in the SEC Championship Game. USC and Ole Miss have split their 16 meetings over the years.

The Gamecocks 2020 home schedule now consists of games against Auburn, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas A&M. The road slate features trips to Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. Dates of all games are expected to be announced in the next two weeks. The first game will be scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26. The SEC Championship game will be held in Atlanta on Saturday, Dec. 19.

“We made every effort to create a schedule that is as competitive as possible and builds on the existing eight Conference games that had already been scheduled for 2020,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey in a statement. “This schedule is a one-year anomaly that we have developed under unique circumstances presented by the impact of COVID-19.”

Under normal circumstances, SEC schools play the other six teams in their division, two non-divisional opponents and four out-of-conference games each season.  In the newly revised schedule for 2020, each school will play four non-divisional opponents in addition to the other six teams in its division.
