The Clemson basketball staff is on the board with its first commitment for the 2021 class in 6-3 combo guard Joshua Beadle of Columbia’s Cardinal Newman High School. Beadle announce his decision Saturday afternoon. He chose the Tigers over Wake Forest, Furman, College of Charleston and VCU.

“It was a very hard decision because all the schools were good schools, but the degree weighed over the other schools,” Beadle said. “That made a big difference.”

Clemson coach Brad Brownell and assistant Antonio Reynolds Dean followed Beadle for a long time on the recruiting trail before offering in early May. He also attended a pair of games at Clemson last season, so the efforts the Tigers put into recruiting him, over some other more heralded prospects, was key in his decision.

“They were excited and pretty much said we can get to work now,” Beadle said. “I liked that they made me a priority, even though they are an ACC school,” Beadle said. “That’s all you can really ask for.  They play pretty fast-paced and they play thru their guards as well.  I felt like he (Brownell) was a really good coach and he and I got closer over the quarrantine and lately really.  And Coach Dean has helped out as well with the recruiting.”

Beadle plays both backcourt positions in high school and averaged 16 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game last season. He said Brownell has spelled out clearly for him what he wants him to do in his offense.

“They want me to play the point guard position,” the lefthanded Beadle said.  “They say I have a high IQ and I have a good feel for the game, and that’s what they want and that’s what they need.”

Brownell has three more scholarships he can offer for the 2021 class. He currently has 12 on scholarship and he will lose three seniors after this season.
