Clarke’s two run blast lifts #Gamecocks past Furman in 12 innings (VIDEO)

USC’s struggling offense was put on ice again by Furman pitching Tuesday night at Fluor Field in Greenville. Held to a single run thru 11 innings, the Gamecocks got a two run homer by Wes Clarke in the top of the 12th to pull out a 3-1 win over the Paladins. The Gamecocks improve to 8-4 and the Paladins fall to 5-7.

Notes on the Gamecock victory

  • Furman took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a home run by Jake Crawford. The Gamecocks tied the game in the top of the 5th on a RBI triple by Jeff Heinrich.
  • The Gamecocks got a runner to third in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings but did not score. They left 13 on base. The Gamecocks were 1-13 with runners in scoring position.
  • USC pitching was outstanding with starter Patrick Coyne allowing 3 hits and 1 run over 4 innings. He did uncork 3 wild pitchers.
  • The maligned bullpen stepped up with Graham Lawson, Cam Tringali and TJ Shook combining for 8 no-hit innings. Lawson did walk two. Gamecock pitching struck out 12.
