Wes Clarke homered for 2nd straight game Sunday (File/Ryan Bethea)

The brooms were on standby Sunday at Founders Park as USC went for the three game sweep of Holy Cross to open the season. But with a cold, steady rain encompassing Founders Park, not even the squeegees could keep the infield playable, and the game was called after 4.5 innings with the Gamecocks leading 5-0. Since the game had reached the bottom of the 5th, it was an official game.

The Gamecocks scored four runs in the third after two were out, and the fall never left the infield. USC loaded the bases and scored two runs on hit batters, one run on a walk and one run on an infield single to short.

The Gamecocks’ final run came on a solo homer in the 4th by Wes Clarke, his second homer in as many days.

Junior college transfer Brannon Jordan pitched all five innings for the Gamecocks. He allowed just 2 hits and struck out 9. He did not walk a batter.

For the weekend, Gamecock pitching allowed 4 earned runs, struck out 31 and yielded 7 walks.

The Gamecocks return to the field Tuesday afternoon against Winthrop.
