Mike Bobo was officially announced as the Gamecocks new offensive coordinator, Tuesday. The University of South Carolina Board of Trustees approved Bobo’s contract that will pay the former Colorado State head coach $1.2 million per year for two years. The Board also approved an amendment to Will Muschamp’s contract that cuts his annual salary by varying amounts from 2020-24 and his buyout down from $15.3 million to $13.2 million if he’s let go after next season. Running backs coach Thomas Brown also received a two-year extension and an increase in salary from $300,000 to $500,000.

Georgia averaged 41.3 points/game and 6.79 yards/play in 2014, Bobo’s last season in Athens before taking the head job with Colorado State. In his second year with the Rams (2016), Bobo’s offense averaged 35.3 points/game and 6.68 yards/play.
With his background steeped in the run-heavy Georgia I-formation, Bobo’s offenses ran the ball more than they passed it in every season from 2007-2018. It was only in 2019 that he dialed up more pass plays than running plays. That was likely out of necessity, as the 2019 Colorado State defense surrendered over 31 points/game in a 4-8 season. In his time with Colorado State, Bobo set out to mesh traditional pro-style sets with a faster tempo.
Bobo will be seeing some familiar faces in the Gamecocks coaching room as he has multiple ties to South Carolina’s staff. Bobo was a teammate of head coach Will Muschamp at Georgia before coaching alongside wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon and running backs coach Thomas Brown.
