Greenwood native and former Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall has another strong team at Wichita State this season and his Shockers proved to be well ahead of USC at this early stage of the season Tuesday night with a 70-47 win at the Cancun Challenge in Mexico. The Shockers improve to 6-0 while the Gamecocks fall to 4-2. Marshall’s team clamped down defensively on the Gamecocks holding them to just 32% shooting for the game. Maik Kotsar was the only Gamecock to score in double figures with 12.
Wichita never trailed and built a 23-7 lead midway thru the first half on the way to a 41-22 halftime lead. The closest the Gamecocks could get in the second half was 16 points.
The Gamecocks were only 3-10 from three point range and 8-17 from the line, and they were outrebounded by 9. And they had 19 turnovers the Shockers converted to 20 points.
Wichita guard Erik Stevenson led all scorers with 19 points.
