Desmond Evans

USC has pursued DE Desmond Evans of Sanford, NC hard for the past two seasons. Friday afternoon the Gamecocks will learn if their hard work has paid off. Evans is set to announce his college commitment Friday afternoon around 2:00 during his school’s homecoming pep rally. He said he made his decision about a week ago but has not told the school. Along with USC, Evans had North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Tennessee and Florida on his final list.

Evans visited USC for games twice last season. He also visited for the spring game the end of March. But that was his last visit to Columbia. He had planned to get to at least one game this season but that trip never materialized. However, he said late last month he was having regular contact from recruiters Mike Peterson and Kyle Krantz.

Evans also visited North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Tennessee in the summer, and he was back in Chapel Hill for the Clemson game last month.

Wednesday night Evans said the school he settled on answered several questions he had in his mind about programs he was considering.

“First is, if I felt like home there,” Evans said. “Second, do me and the coaching staff have a good relationship.  And third, who’s coming in, can I start my first year.  Who’s coming in my class that’s good and have a chance to win games.  And can they develop me so I can go to the NFL.  And the education.”

Now that he knows where he will play his college football, Evans is looking forward to that program doing some big things on the national scene.

“I think we’re going to be great,” he said. “The people who are going there in my class, I feel like we can turn everything around.”
