USC held scrimmage Saturday afternoon inside Williams-Brice Stadium, the last major scrimmage of camp for the Gamecocks before they begin to focus on North Carolina late next week. Head coach Will Muschamp did not report any new injuries from the day, and he had good news on tight end Evan Hinson who had a heart procedure this week. His expected downtime has been cut in half to between 3-4 weeks. Muschamp said the team was more sloppy than he would like with penalties and the like, but quarterback Jake Bentley continues to protect the football well.
Quick notes from Muschamp press conference:
Expects Kier Thomas to be cleared soon.
Dowdle and Edwards out today but will practice Monday. Dowdle has a bone bruise, Edwards a shoulder.
Feels they’ve done a nice job in the run game, good blocking, thought Feaster look good, had a touchdown run on a cut back, caught passes well.
Shi Smith and Vann stood out to him today. Said Smith has had a great overall camp.
DJ Wonnum has had a very good camp, has played well, offenses will have to account for him.
Douglas and Stanley will serve as backups to Manos at center.
Brad Johnson has been slowed by a groin injury and hasn’t been able to scrimmage. Danny Fennell, Muschamp said, has had a “fantastic” camp coming off the ACL.
Stanley and Roderick were out at practice today. Roderick is not yet fully cleared but should be by Monday.
Ibe should be back next week from his strained pec.
Bentley is taking care of the football, had some explosive plays, need to clean some things up in protection, better than they were from first scrimmage, thought Bentley had a good week, struck together 4-5 really good days.
Muschamp post-scrimmage press conference, opens with comments on retirement of TE Kiel Pollard
