Considering how in three games over the last three seasons against North Carolina in Charlotte’s BB&T Ballpark USC was outscored 46-8, one might say it would snow in South Carolina in April before the Gamecocks won a game in that beautiful downtown park. Well, it snowed in York County Tuesday morning, and the Gamecocks defeated NC State in that very ballpark 10-8, rallying from a 4-0 deficit after a half inning to do so.
A game that had five first inning home runs ended with a Jacob Olson two out, two run homer to leftfield. It was Olson’s second homer of the night.. The Gamecocks also got home runs from Luke Berryhill and Brady Allen.
Starting pitcher Dylan Harley got rocked for five runs in one inning of work, and his ERA climbed to 9.39. But the bullpen of TJ Shook, John Gilreath and Wesley Sweat limited State to just three runs the rest of the way. Two of those runs came in the top of the 8th to tie the game, and Olson sent the Gamecock partisans home happy in the bottom of the 9th.
Sweatt earned the victory to improve to 2-2. The Gamecocks are now 18-11 and open an SEC series at Alabama Thursday night.
