USC will make its shortest drive in history to play in a bowl game later this month when the Gamecocks travel the 90 miles up I-77 to Charlotte to face Virginia. The Gamecocks and Cavaliers wee placed in the game by their respective conferences as part of the Group of Six bowls. The game will kickoff at Noon on December 29th and will be televised by ABC.
This will be USC’s 23rd bowl appearance. The Gamecocks are 9-13 in those games and have won five of their last six. Will Muschamp will be the first Gamecock coach to take his team to a bowl game in each of hi first three seasons.
USC has played three regular season games at Bank of America Stadium, winning all three, and will open the 2019 season there against North Carolina. Likewise, Virginia is unbeaten in two games at BOA Stadium. The Cavaliers won the first two Belk Bowls in 2002 and ’03.
This season USC is 7-5 (4-4 in the SEC) and Virginia is 7-5 (4-4 in the ACC). These are former ACC rivals and the Gamecocks have won 21 of the 34 meetings. The last one was in 2003, a 31-7 USC win.
Some notes from the Sunday night bowl press conference:
- Bryson Allen-Williams is definite for being able to play in the bowl game, not sure about DJ Wonnum at this point, Jaycee Horn, Aaron Sterling and Jaylin Dickerson should be able to go.
- Looking at JT Ibe for a possible sixth year, having a hard time coming back from knee injury.
- Gamecocks planning to arrive in Charlotte on Christmas night, first practice in Charlotte on the 26th. Hilton City Center will be the Gamecock hotel.
- USC will be the designated visiting team.
