The Wofford Terriers opened Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium to its second straight season-opening sellout, but fell to the North Carolina Tar Heels, 78-67, Tuesday night.
The Terriers showed a bit of the magic that led to an upset win at UNC last year in Chapel Hill, but the Tar Heels pulled away in the final five minutes.
Trailing by as many as 12 early in the half, Wofford’s leading scorer Fletcher Magee overcame a four-point first half to get some shots to fall. The Terriers drew even at the 10:39 mark at 46 apiece, but could not get over the hump.
Magee led the Terriers with 21 points, while UNC’s Luke Maye led all scorers pouring in 24.
This game was scheduled as part of a two-for-one with UNC, with Wofford going to the Dean Dome in last year and next year between Tuesday night’s clash in Spartanburg.
Wofford Head Coach Mike Young said he’s greatful for North Carolina Head Coach Roy Williams for bringing his team to play there, and that this team will learn a great deal from their battle with the #8 Tar Heels:
