Team Penske Racing had not tasted victory at Darlington since 1975. Sunday night in the 69th running of the Bojangles’ Southern 500, Brad Keselowski brought that dry spell to an end beating his teammate Joey Logano to the checkered flag by 1.22 seconds.
It’s Keselowski’s first ever Southern 500 victory, his first win of the season and the 25th of his career. The victory capped a big weekend for Keselowski who also won Saturday’s Xfinity Series race.
Kyle Larson was the class of the field leading 284 of the 367 laps. He was the leader going into the final yellow flag pit stop with 24 laps to go. But he was edged by Keselowski coming off pit road. Keselowski shot away on the restart and led the remaining laps, the only ones he led all night.
Larson finished third followed by Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott. Keselowski already had clinched a playoff spot on points and two other drivers, Denny Hamlin and Aric Almirola, nailed down their spots at Darlington with just this week’s race at Indianapolis left for the regular season.
