USC opened its season with a relatively easy 49-15 win over Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks entered as a 28 point favorite and used a 28 point first half to erase any doubt about the verdict. The 34 point victory margin is the biggest for USC under third year head coach Will Muschamp.
The Gamecocks scored touchdowns on six of their first seven possessions with Jake Bentley tossing four touchdowns during that stretch to set a single game career high. He finished the day 22-29 for 250 yards and a QB rating of 193.8.
Jake Bentley & Kiel Pollard
Bentley, no doubt, was happy to have a healthy Deebo Samuel back on the field. He fired a seven yard completion to Samuel on the game’s first play. Samuel finished the day with seven catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, a spectacular one-handed catch just inside the the left sideline.
There also was good balance in the 557 yard offensive attack with 294 yards thru the air and 264 yards on the ground. Rico Dowdle led the ground game with 105 yards. Ty’son Williams added 82.
Rico Dowdle & Shi Smith
The Gamecock defense held Coastal to 238 yards with eight tackles for loss and three sacks. The Chants were held to three field goals until punching in a touchdown late in the game.
Bryson Allen-Williams & Javon Kinlaw
The two negatives for the defense…a sprained ankle for DJ Wonnum though Muschamp expects him to be ready for Georgia, and a targeting penalty for Nick Harvey which will cost him the first half against Georgia.
The Gamecocks will open SEC play next Saturday at Williams-Brice against Georgia. Kickoff is set for 3;30 PM on CBS.
