As South Carolina inches closer towards its opening kickoff on September 1st against Coastal Carolina, Gamecocks Head Coach Will Muschamp has declared winners in a couple of key position battles.
Kicker Parker White will retain his starting placekicking duties, while Bryan Edwards will be USC’s starting punt returner.
Speaking to a group at the Columbia Touchdown Club, Muschamp told those assembled that White had fixed some things mechanically with his routine, and stood off a charge from graduate transfer Shane Hynes and the return of last year’s opening-game starter Alex Woznick.
Muschamp also hopes Edwards brings some more security to a position that has seen some curious adventures over the last couple of seasons.
Special Teams Coordinator Coleman Hutzler spoke earlier in Fall Camp about both position battles:
Edwards is not new to return specialist duties, as he handled those responsibilities at Conway High School. To hear Edwards talk about trying out for the position, and the outlook going into his junior year, click below:
South Carolina’s Head Coach also provided an update on the status of the field at Williams-Brice Stadium following the wear and tear of Tuesday night’s Beyonce and Jay-Z concert:
Muschamp: Ray Tanner has promised me that our field is going to be fine.
The company we’re working with, has put fields in place ready for play in 2-3 days.
The people we contracted the concert with are taking care of the cost of field replacement.

The Gamecocks will practice Friday through Sunday before taking their usual Monday off day during game week. Muschamp says with Fall Camp officially over, their focus now is solely on Coastal Carolina.
