Clemson and NC State are hooked up in an old fashioned, head to head recruiting battle for CB Shyheim Battle of Rocky Mount, NC. Coaches from both sides regularly hit him up on the phone and social media. Tuesday Clemson defensive coordinator caught up with Battle who is in Arizona practicing with the U.S. National Team for the IFAU U19 World Championship in Mexico City.
“How could I fit into the program and what way could I get on the field early, those kinds of things,” said Battle of his conversation with Venables who has been more in touch with him recently than corners coach Mike Reed. He also said Venables is good friends with USA coach Matt Hennesy, a high school coach in Oklahoma, and has been checking on him thru the coach.
He said he also gets regular text messages from State coach Dave Doeren and he talked with cornerbacks coach George Harlow on Monday.
“Touching base with me,” he said of State. “They’ve got a lot of commits coming in out of North Carolina so they’re just keeping me informed about what’s going on pretty much.”
Battle settled on Clemson and NC State as his top two in the spring and neither has been able to separate itself from the other in his mind.
“I’m in between things with both schools right now so I’m just putting a lot of thought into it,” he said. “When I get home (July 23rd) I’m going to visit NC State at the end of the week. And I’m going to go to the Clemson cookout on the 27th. Every day that goes by I’m thinking about do I want to go here or do I want to go here. Right now it’s kind of hard for me.”
Battle has set December 15th for a decision announcement but he said it could come sooner than that if the feeling strikes him.
