Clemson further enhanced its NCAA Tournament resume Monday night with a 5-4 win over Florida State at Doug Kingsmore Stadium that clinched the series between the two ACC powers. The winning run came off the bat of Jordan Greene who slammed the first pitch he saw from Connor Grady in the bottom of the 9th deep over the leftfield fence, a blast that bumped Clemson up two spots in the RPI to 8th and improved it’s ACC record to 19-8.
It was the kind of series you would expect from the longtime ACC rivals. The Seminoles won the opener Saturday in 13 innings 3-2 giving their coach Mike Martin the most wins in D-1 baseball history. The Tigers responded on Sunday with a 12-7 victory to set the stage for Monday night’s drama.
In their wins, the Tigers had the long ball working hitting three in each game. Seth Beer had two of them, including a game tying two run shot Monday night, giving him 14 on the season. Chris Williams hit his 14th in the win on Sunday. And Logan Davidson, who hit his 9th homer of the season Monday night, had 5 hits and 4 RBIs in the series.
No Tiger starter went deeper into a game than Jacob Hennessy’s 5.1 innings on Saturday night, so Monte Lee had to get the most out of his bullpen. Ryan Miller and Carson Spiers made two appearances each and the pen yielded just five earned runs.
In Monday’s win, Jake Higgenbotham, MIller and Spiers did not allow an earned run and overcame four errors to keep the game in reach. Spiers picked up the win and Brooks Crawford earned the win on Sunday.
The Tigers will close out their regular season home schedule this week with a game against Western Carolina Wednesday followed by a three game weekend series against Austin Peay.
