USC won the weekend series at Vanderbilt, it’s first road series win of the season, coming back from the depths to pull out wins Friday and Sunday. That’s two straight series victories for the Gamecocks over top 20 SEC opponents. USC is now 11-10 in the SEC, tied for third in the East with Vandy, but owning that tiebreaker. The RPI now is 45.
The Gamecocks battled back from a 7-0 deficit Friday night scoring six runs in the sixth to go ahead 8-7. The bullpen of TJ Shook, Eddie Demurias and Sawyer Bridges shut out the Commodores over the final 6.1 innings to allow the comeback to take place.
Sunday the Gamecocks trailed 4-0 after two innings and 9-6 after seven. But they scored three runs in the 8th to tie and a run in the 9th to go ahead. Graham Lawson pitched two hitless innings of relief to earn the win.
Those victories were sandwiched around an 8-1 loss on Saturday.
The Gamecocks won the series in Nashville despite getting nothing from their starting rotation. Logan Chapman, Adam Hill and Cody Morris were battered to the tune of 17 hits and 21 earned runs. But the bullpen was stalwart as the relievers allowed just eight hits and six earned runs over the three games.
The Gamecocks had a 3-1 week which included a win against Furman at Fluor Field to improve to 26-18 and a season high eight games over .500.
TJ Hopkins led the Gamecocks’ offense over the weekend with six hits and is hitting .444 since returning from injury. He’s hitting .358 for the season. Carlos Cortez hit his team high 12th homer in the win Sunday, one of three hit by the Gamecocks who how have 57 homers on the season. The team batting average sits at .275 and the team ERA is at 4.28.
The Gamecocks do not have a mid-week game this week and will host Ole Miss this coming weekend.
