Learfield Communications and South Carolina Radio Network are proud to congratulate SportsTalk host Phil Kornblut for receiving the Herman Helms Excellence in Media Award from the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.
Kornblut has been a mainstay in the South Carolina sports scene for the better part of four decades, including the last 34 as the host of SportsTalk, a statewide program showcasing widespread coverage of collegiate and High School athletics in the Palmetto State.
A six-time winner of the state’s Sportscaster of the Year award, Kornblut is as home-grown to South Carolina as you can find, from his roots in Latta, SC to his graduation from the University of South Carolina in 1979.
In his time with the network, Kornblut has worked with countless professionals who trace their roots to SportsTalk and South Carolina Radio Network including Carolina Panthers radio voice Mick Mixon, SEC Network play-by-play announcer Mike Morgan and 2017 South Carolina Sportscaster of the Year Scott Eisberg of WCIV-TV in Charleston.
Kornblut’s main passion remains his reporting on the recruiting trails of South Carolina and Clemson, whose coverage can be found nightly on SportsTalk, in newspapers across the state and at sportstalksc.com.
“I am very appreciative of the SC Athletic Hall of Fame for selecting me for the Herman Helms Award,” Kornblut said upon being notified of the honor. “Mr. Helms was a giant of journalism in our state and to be associated with his legacy is very humblng. It is our goal each night on SportsTalk to provide news, interviews and provocative commentary to sports fans across the state and I want to thank the Hall of Fame for recognizing our efforts over the past 34 years.”
Past winners of the award include current WIS-TV Sports Director Rick Henry, and sports columnists Ron Morris and Ken Burger, among others.
SportsTalk can be on heard on 28 stations as part of South Carolina Radio Network, distributed by Learfield Communications. The show also runs a video stream on Periscope via the station’s Twitter account, @sportstalksc.
An industry leader for more than four decades, Learfield has a deep presence in the college athletics landscape nationwide. The company manages the multimedia rights and sponsorship initiatives for nearly 130 collegiate institutions, conferences and arenas nationwide. South Carolina Radio Network is a branch under Learfield’s News and Agriculture Division, which provides news and sports information to listeners through six statewide networks.
