The South Carolina Gamecocks punctuated their first SEC series win in 11 tries with a sweep of the Tennessee Volunteers at Founders Park this weekend.
USC received its biggest jolt of the week on Thursday with the return of Adam Hill as the opening-game starting pitcher.
Hill, pitching for the first time since missing the Georgia series with a shoulder injury, delivered five scoreless innings with no hits allowed, four strikeouts and four walks. South Carolina scored three in the first on a bases loaded walk to Chris Cullen and a two-run single to center. Cullen drove in two more runs with a third-inning single. The Gamecocks bullpen threw four innings of one-run ball to secure a 6-1 victory in the opener.
Friday night’s middle game saw Carlos Cortes return to form, opening the scoring with a solo home run in the fourth, following by a Danny Blair solo shot in the fifth. Cortes drove home another run as part of a two-run six, and Cody Morris made it stick with five strikeouts in six innings for a 6-2 win.
South Carolina needed a comeback to take the Saturday finale, after falling behind 3-1 after Tennessee’s half of the fourth inning. Chris Cullen’s RBI-groundout pulled USC within one and then the Gamecocks tied it with Riley Hogan’s bases-loaded walk in the seventh. Jacob Olsen provided the big blow for South Carolina with a tie-breaking single in the eighth, and Matt Williams brought home two more with a double later in the frame. Eddy Demurias recorded the final four outs for his third win of the year.
Saturday’s win caps an undefeated week for the Gamecocks, who began the week with a 3-2 win Tuesday over Davidson.
Head Coach Mark Kingston recapped the week following Saturday’s game:
South Carolina will play a standalone game Tuesday against North Carolina at BB&T Park in Charlotte, before a three-game series at Kentucky beginning Friday.
