One of USC’s primary recruiting targets has been 6-11 Brandon Stone who is a native of the Pittsburgh area by attends Christ School in Arden, NC. Tuesday Stone announced his intention to sign with the 2018 class with USC, Pitt, Penn State and Duquesne his finalists. That won’t change unless more schools draw his interest and he decides to delay until 2019.
Stone has visited USC in the past and he plans a return trip for an official visit in April. The Gamecocks have worked him extensively over the past several months and that attention paid off by him placing them on his short list.
“There are not many better coaches out there than Frank Martin and the rest of the guys on his staff do a great job,” Stone said. “They are a winning team and they make runs in the tournament. They play in the SEC and that’s a big time conference. I had a great time on my visit and really enjoyed the campus. I know that staff is going to be there for a while and they made me a priority over the past couple of months. Chuck Martin texts me and calls me multiple times a week. They reach out to my family. I talk to the graduate assistant Brian Steele because he’s a Pittsburgh guy as well and I have a good relationship with him and he let’s me know how bad Frank Martin wants me.”
The other schools on his list have the logistical advantage over USC for Stone but he said that’s not an issue when it comes to making the final decision.
“It would be nice to play close to home so my family could come to my games and I could go home to see them. It really hasn’t been a big deal, nothing that will persuade me a whole lot. Growing up I was a big Pitt Panther fan. In talking to them (Pitt) they told me I would be the focal point of their offense. I can go in and get early playing time.”
Stone will take an unofficial visit to Duquesne on March 4th while he’s home for spring break. He also plans to set official visits with Pitt and Penn State while he’s home on spring break and he will set one with USC for early April. He said there is no favorite among the four.
This season Stone is averaging 15 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks per game.
