USC coach Will Muschamp won a major recruiting battle with SEC rivals Tennessee and Auburn Saturday when OL Dylan Wonnum (6-5 290) of Tucker, GA announced a commitment to the Gamecocks. Wonnum will join his brother, defensive end DJ, in the Gamecock program in 2018. He gives the Gamecocks 22 for the class including a pair of commitments, Bryce Thompson and Ronnie Jamison, who did not sign in December.
Wonnum was an Under Armour All American last season and is regarded as one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the country. He’ll give the Gamecocks some much needed size on the edge, but he’s more than just a hulking lineman according to his coach.
“He’s very talented,” said Tucker coach Bryan Lamar. “He can be very physical and nasty. He’s very athletic and loves to get out and run. And he comes off the ball well. He loves to win against the guy on the other side of the ball. He’s got some of that dog in him.”
Wonnum has taken several visits to USC over the past three years to watch his brother, and he was also in on several recruiting visits. And he always got the same message from the Gamecock coaches.
“They said I will fit in good with their offense and they are going to run the ball more,” Wonnum said. “They said I’m a great run blocker so I should fit in good. They look good to me. They are on the come up.”
He also sees an opportunity for early playing time with the Gamecocks.
“They need me,” he said. “They need an offensive tackle and I can come in and start early and do what I need to do.
Wonnum also is excited about the idea of playing for Gamecock offensive line coach Eric Wolford.
“”He’s a good coach, he knows what he’s talking about I can tell,” Wonnum said. “He’s just a good coach. He’s a very hands on person so when he’s explaining something, he’s got to show me.”
Wonnum’s commitment leaves the Gamecocks with two uncommitted targets on their board, DL John Mincey and DL Rick Sandidge. Mincey is down to USC and Tennessee and could announce Monday. Sandidge is down to USC and Georgia and is scheduled to meet with Muschamp and some assistants today.
