DL John Mincey of Homerville, GA met Friday morning with USC defensive line coach Lance Thompson but that’s not all the activity he has had and will have with the Gamecocks on Friday as they remain in all out pursuit in a one on one battle with Tennessee.
Thompson was the Clinch County High School first thing Friday morning and had about a 30 minute meeting with Mincey.
“It went good,” said Clinch County assistant coach Don Tison. “He also talked with Coach Muschamp on the phone. T-Rob (Travaris Robinson) is coming in this afternoon and is going to be hanging around and will then go watch him play his basketball game tonight (in McRae, GA). He plans to talk to him after the game.”
Tennessee coaches, including head coach Jeremy Pruitt, made their final visit with Mincey on Wednesday.
“He’ll tell you he feels like he’s leaning one way or another but he won’t say which one,” Tison said Friday morning. “He likes both schools equally, one or the other. He has a gut feeling about one but he hasn’t disclosed that.”
Tison also said Mincey indicated to him Friday that he may be ready to make a commitment announcement as early as Monday instead of waiting until National Signing Day.
Tison is close to Mincey and joined him on his official visit to USC last weekend, and he has his own personal feeling about where his star defensive lineman should go.
“I feel like South Carolina is very much like south Georgia. I think Muschamp and his staff are going to recruit a lot of the same type of kids that are real similar to John, the small town, south Georgia, country, quiet, not big city kids,” Tison said. “I just feel like John would thrive in that environment more than he would in other environments. Feel like he fits in there but it’s his decision and I’ll support him wherever he goes.”
