OL LaMarius Benson Thursday announced a decommitment from USC’s 2018 class. Benson was one of the early commitments making his pledge last March. But according to Benson, Gamecock coach Will Muschamp and offensive line coach Eric Wolford told him during his official visit he needed to be in better shape. He was at 315 pounds and they wanted him under that if they were going to take him. Benson took an official visit to Central Florida last weekend. He’s the second Gamecock commitment who did not sign in December to drop out of the class. The first was defensive back Marlon Character who was passed on because he didn’t graduate from his junior college in December. There are two other early commitments the Gamecocks did not sign in December. Defensive back Bryce Thompson of Dutch, is expected to sign Wednesday. Receiver Ronnie Jamison of Highland Junior College, KS is questionable for signing with the Gamecocks at this point.
WR Warren Thompson of Seffner, FL Wednesday afternoon committed to Florida State over USC. He made his official visit to USC last weekend. It’s the second time he’s committed to Willie Taggert. Previously, he was committed to Oregon when Taggert was the coach of the Ducks.
QB Sam Howell of Monroe, NC was offered by Miami. He also has USC and Clemson offers.
DE Dorian Gerald of Florence and the College of the Canyons JC, CA is on an official visit to Arkansas.
Clemson target DB Mario Goodrich said he still has an in home visit left with Georgia before he makes his final decision. Clemson and LSU are his other choices.
Clemson offered DB Trevon Flowers of Tucker, GA Wednesday morning during a meeting with Dabo Swinney at his school. He went on an official visit to Clemson Wednesday afternoon and will go to Tennessee this weekend. He’s also considering Kentucky.
USC offered 2020 LB Bryson Eason of Memphis.
PK Ryan Fitzgerald of Moultrie, GA was contacted by USC special teams coach Coleman Hutzler who told him he’s going to try to come down Friday to check in on him. Fitzgerald said he will visit USC for a spring practice. He’s going to Mississippi State for a junior day and is also looking at visits to Tennessee and Purdue. He’s also hearing from Georgia Southern.
USC and Clemson target DB Jammie Robinson of Cordele, GA is expecting Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh at his school Thursday.
