Chris Silva scored a career high 27 points to lead USC to its first SEC win of the season Saturday night at the Colonial Life Arena 71-60 over Vanderbilt. Silva, doing most of his damage around the basket, helped the Gamecocks to a 32 point night in the paint.
Silva hit 9-15 field goal attempts and 9-12 free throws. He also stayed out of foul trouble and was able to log 31 minutes. Wesley Myers was the only other Gamecock in double figures with 17 points. No other Gamecock scored more than 6 points.
Frank Martin said the last two days of practice were focused on defense and it showed. The Gamecocks held the Commodores to 35.2% shooting, their best defensive number against a D-1 team since the season opening win at Wofford.
Vandy led 28-26 at halftime but USC opened the second half with a 13-3 run. The Commodores got to within three at 48-45, but a 5-0 run, all in Silva free throws, boosted the lead back to eight with 5;24 to play and the Gamecocks went on from there to their 10th win in 15 games. They are 1-2 in the SEC. They play at Alabama Tuesday night.
